Tamaar Tóth Varjú maakt kunst die uitnodigt tot stilstaan, voelen en opnieuw kijken. In haar werk komen mode, beeldende kunst en filosofie samen in een dynamisch en zintuiglijk geheel. Ze speelt met lucht, materiaal, ruimte en herinnering. Haar installaties en objecten zijn ervaringen die ontstaan tussen maker en toeschouwer: tastbaar, betekenisvol, verwonderend.

Ze studeerde in 1995 af aan de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten Utrecht in Modevormgeving en de lerarenopleiding Tekenen/Kunstgeschiedenis. In 2019 behaalde ze haar master Kunsteducatie aan de HKU, waarin ze onderzocht hoe verwondering niet alleen individueel, maar ook pedagogisch van betekenis is. Haar thesis Het wonder van verwondering werd omarmd door Museum Catharijneconvent en dient sindsdien als onderlegger voor de vernieuwing van het museum. 

Als kunstenaar, docent en onderwijsontwikkelaar werkt Tamaar op het snijvlak van maken, meemaken en betekenis geven. Binnen Curriculum.nu heeft ze meegewerkt aan de landelijke visie op kunst- en cultuuronderwijs. Daarin staat het artistiek proces centraal: leren door te maken, betekenis te geven aan wat je doet en door ervaringen die raken. Haar projecten – zoals Master your Museum – tonen hoe kunst niet alleen iets is wat je bekijkt, maar iets wat je actief meemaakt en waarmee je jezelf en de wereld kunt onderzoeken.

Van de iconische Coat of Secrets tot de verstilde installatie Reflections — steeds zoekt Tamaar naar vormen waarin materiaal, emotie en ruimte samen verhalen vertellen. Haar werk reageert op de toeschouwer en verandert met de context. Kunst als ontmoeting, als tijdelijk landschap van betekenis.

Internationaal was haar werk onder meer te zien bij Art under the Volcano in Indonesië en Landscapes of the Mind in Okinawa, Japan. Haar werk wil niet alleen bewonderd worden, maar ervaren — fysiek, mentaal en relationeel.

Momenteel werkt ze aan het project Ik zou je het liefste in een doosje willen doen: een onderzoek naar kunst, herinnering en dementie. In dit project ontwikkelt ze een tastbaar object dat verwondering en zintuiglijke herinnering inzet om contact, communicatie en verbondenheid tussen mensen met dementie en hun naasten te stimuleren.

Wat Tamaar maakt, vertrekt altijd vanuit een houding van nieuwsgierigheid. Haar werk laat zien hoe kunst een oefening kan zijn in aandacht, in betekenis geven, en in samen opnieuw leren kijken.

Tamaar Tóth Varjú creates art that invites you to pause, feel, and look again. Her work merges fashion, visual art and philosophy into a tactile, poetic whole. She works with air, space, materials and memory — her installations and objects are not just to be seen, but to be experienced. Her art lives in the moment of encounter, between making and meaning, between the artist and the viewer.

Tamaar graduated in Fashion Design and Art Education from the University of the Arts Utrecht (HKU) in 1995. In 2019 she completed her Master’s in Arts Education with a thesis titled The Wonder of Wonder, exploring how wonder can be a transformative force in education and museum learning. This research was adopted by Museum Catharijneconvent and now informs their educational renewal.

As an artist, teacher and curriculum developer, Tamaar operates at the intersection of making, experiencing and meaning-making. As part of the national Curriculum.nu development team, she contributed to the Dutch vision on arts education — one that places the artistic process at its core: learning by making, reflecting, and giving meaning to experience.

Her projects — including Master your Museum — demonstrate how art is not only something to observe, but something to live through. Through participation, curiosity and creation, art becomes a space for learning about the self and the world.

She is currently working on I’d Love to Keep You in a Little Box, a design-based research project exploring how sensory memory and wonder can support communication and connection between people with dementia and their loved ones. The project bridges care, art and interaction in a poetic, hands-on way.
